UK weather can certainly be unpredictable, one day torrential rain, the next brilliant sunshine. But when the hot spells come, do we know how to handle them?
Below are 6 tips that may help you cope in the heat!
- Drink Water
This can be hard to do, when its nice weather it’s all too easy to opt for the alcohol instead of water but it’s very important that we keep up with our water intake. You need to drink lots more water than normal to make up for the water you lose through sweating and keeping properly hydrated is good for the brain and concentration which will help your studies. - Dress Appropriately
When it’s hot try to avoid heavy clothing such as jeans, jumpers and jackets no matter how ‘stylish’ they are. Wear lightweight, breathable clothes to ensure you say as cool as possible. - Wear Sun Cream
You might think that using sun protection in the UK isn’t ‘cool’ but this is your health we’re talking about. Also, the saying that you don’t tan when you wear sun-cream = total myth! Even though some sun protection can be greasy and sticky it is so much better to be safe than sorry. Having skin cancer and other nasty related illnesses caused by the sun is not worth the five minutes it takes to put it on. Did you know, the most common age for skin cancer is between 15-35? Scary isn’t it? So, make sure you are creamed up and apply more than once a day if you’re going to be out in the sun a lot. - Use Fans at Night
There is nothing worse than tossing and turning all night in the heat. Using a fan will help keep you cool and get a better night’s sleep. - Exercising Comfortably
Just because it’s hot doesn’t mean that you should stop exercising. Try switching to swimming or exercise in shorter time frames. For example, work out for half an hour a day and if you still don’t feel like that’s enough then do a half hour workout in the morning and another at night. Try to avoid working out at the hottest time of the day. Exercising later in the evening when it isn’t as warm will make you feel far more comfortable. - Make the Most of the Weather!
As we don’t get this type of weather as often as we’d like in the UK, make the most of it. Go out with friends, have some drinks, host a BBQ and relax. Just make sure that you are doing the best you can to look after yourself and make it a summer to remember.
