Student Accommodation

Moving away from home to somewhere new can be difficult, especially if it’s into a new house with people you don’t particularly know. To make your student accommodation feel more like home we have put together the 6 great tips below.

1.  Lighting

It might be a cliché but adding some fairy lights to your room can give it the cosy feel you’re looking for. Or, adding a standing lamp in the corner of your room can add a subtle change in lighting that is very homely and relaxing. If you’re a student that loves a good read, adding a reading light could be more suitable for you, as well as practical for when you’re studying.
You may very well be on a tight budget but not to worry as many things can be bought second hand from charity shops or high street stores such as Home Bargains, Wilko’s and B&M. Fairy lights will probably have to be bought new, but you can always go to Primark’s home section.

2. New Bedding & TowelsStudent Accommodation

Once you’ve decided on a colour scheme for your accessories, it’s time to pick matching bedding and towels.
Everyone knows that there is no better feeling than climbing in to bed with fresh sheets, especially new ones. You don’t have to spend loads either! Check out the high street stores as previously mentioned such as Primark, Wilko, Home Bargains, The Range and B & M. If you’re wanting to get everything all in one place, try Sheffield’s Ikea store.

3. Accessories

Get yourself some cushions and a blanket for your bed. If there is enough room for one and you have a bit more to spend, maybe invest in a small rug?

4. Photographs

A lot of students can get home sick when they’re at Uni so add some photographs of family and friends in your room. Some accommodations don’t let you use blue tack or similar so always ask before putting anything on walls. In a lot of student accommodation, you get a desk, a chest of drawers or a bedside table. These are great places to add a couple of your favourite photos of your family and friends. If you don’t have frames, again, you don’t have to spend a fortune, there are many shops on the high street where you can pick up some lovely ones that won’t break the bank.

5. Room Fragrance

Giving your room a pleasant and relaxing fragrance is one of the best things you can do to make it feel homely and relaxing. Potpourri, air fresheners and warm scented waxes are all good ideas and don’t cost too much if you buy supermarkets own brands.

6. Re-arrange Your FurnitureStudent Accommodation

Don’t think that just because your furniture is set out the way that it is, that it must remain in the same place. If you feel like your room isn’t in the best layout or isn’t making the best use of the space, move it around. A lot of the rooms are arranged the same which can stop it from feeling like your own. If you have the space, moving the desk in to a separate area of the room can give the illusion that they’re two separate rooms. Separating your study and relaxation time. Obviously make sure your landlord is OK with this first as they can make sure you don’t block fire exits etc.
