Celebrating Dad on Father’s Day (Students Shoestring Edition)

Have you remembered Father’s Day? If not, don’t worry, you haven’t missed it, it’s on Sunday the 16th of June. If you’ve been busy with studies and exams you may not have given too much thought about what to do so, in this blog we’re going to try to give you a little inspiration and don’t worry, as a student in Sheffield we know you’ll probably be on a tight budget, so our ideas won’t break the bank.

Ideas for the Day

  • Dining Out
If you’re going to see your dad, how about treating him to lunch somewhere? Spending time with you is what he really wants and as a student you’ll know lots of places he’d love to go that won’t break the bank.
  • Bowling
Why not get the whole family together and head out for the day? What better way to celebrate Father’s Day than a bit of healthy competition between a dad and his kids? As bowling can be popular especially on Father’s Day make sure you book in advance… and let him win
  • Visit Historic Places
Fancy a quieter day and visit some historic places? It could cost you less too. You could go to places such as Bolsover Castle, Hardwick Hall or Wentworth Woodhouse. You could even take a picnic with you if the weather is nice. If you have younger children in your family, you could think about a trip to Clumber Park with the football or take the bikes.
  • Cinema / Movie Night
There are new films coming out at the cinema all the time and Meadowhall is not expensive at all. If you and Dad don’t tend to go to the cinema very often then you might both enjoy the change. Or, if you can’t or don’t want to go to the cinema you could suggest a movie night. Buy in some snacks and drinks and have a nice night in.
  • Family Night
How about inviting Dad and the family to your student accommodation in Sheffield? You could order a take-away, get some drinks in and get some of the old board games out, maybe even a film to finish off your night?

Gift Ideas

  • Alcohol
You won’t ever go wrong with dads’ favourite tipple. You don’t have to spend loads to show him how much you appreciate everything he does for you, just 4 cans will be fine.
  • Framed Photograph of You Both
This must be one of the cheapest presents you could buy, and he’ll love it! You can pick up a nice photo frame from The Range, B&M or Home Bargains for next to nothing and if you can’t get a photo printed in Uni, Boots will print one for less than £1 depending on the size.
  • Aftershave
You might be thinking that you can’t afford aftershave, but it doesn’t have to be the expensive market leading brands. Stores such as Superdrug, Body Care and Home Bargains all carry alternative lines that smell just as nice.
  • Personalised Mug
Many websites and shops nowadays personalise everyday items such as mugs and keyrings. Pop a favourite photo memory with your dad on a mug. You can use sites such as PhotoBox, Vistaprint or pop down to Max Spielmann (there’s one in Meadowhall) to personalise gifts.
  • Surprise Bag of Colour Schemed Toiletries
Now, you might be thinking that this is something more appreciated by women on Mother’s Day, however it’s great for Dad too and it will seem like you’re giving them a lot more than you spent! All you need to do is buy a fancy gift bag or box and fill it with Dad’s body sprays, deodorant, face wash, body wash and body scrub etc. You would probably only have to spend around £15 on this idea.

In this day and age, time is a commodity, some of us can rarely afford. Making time for Dad for one day in the year and making him feel appreciated is the best way you can treat him.

We hope this blog has helped give you a few ideas as to what to do with Dad on Father’s Day (and if nothing else, reminded you of the date) but whatever you do make it special for him and make sure you all have a great time.
