Conquering the Comfort Zone Blues: How to Deal with Homesickness as a Student

University! A whirlwind of independence, new experiences, and… homesickness. It might hit you hard, that pang for familiar faces and routines. But fear not, fellow student, feeling homesick is incredibly normal. In fact, research suggests around 70% of freshers experience it.

The good news: this doesn’t have to define your university experience. Here are some tips to tackle those comfort zone blues:

  • Embrace the Normal: Homesickness is a sign of a big adjustment. Acknowledge it, don’t judge yourself. Talking it out with friends, family, or even a university counsellor can be a big help.
  • Connect From Afar: Schedule regular video calls with loved ones back home. Share funny stories from your day, or simply enjoy the virtual company.
  • Build Your New Nest: Surround yourself with things from home – photos, keepsakes, even your favourite mug. Explore the area – find hidden cafes, parks, or museums you can call your own, Sheffield is full of them.
  • Find Your Tribe: University is brimming with people in the same boat. Join societies, attend freshers’ events, or simply strike up conversations in lectures. You might be surprised how many new friends share your longing for home (and your love for bad cafe food!).
  • Home is Where the Activities Are: Don’t become a hermit! Get involved in activities you enjoy, whether it’s sports, drama, or volunteering. Feeling busy and engaged combats loneliness and fosters a sense of belonging.
  • Celebrate Home, Embrace Here: Homesickness doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy your new life. Watch a movie from back home with your flatmates, cook a traditional dish together, or share stories about your hometown.

Remember, university is a journey of self-discovery. Embrace the challenges, celebrate the victories, and know that a little homesickness is just a bump on the road to a fantastic adventure. You’ve got this!
