Cutting back on the spending after Christmas isn’t as difficult as it sounds. There are no Christmas presents to buy, so no unnecessary spending and the good news is you’re probably already stocked up with chocolates and toiletries!

So, let’s look at other areas where you can spend less and save more.

Food Shops

Plan out what food you have in at home and what else you need to make a meal. If you do this each week then you will use up most of your food and ensure that nothing goes out of date. Rather than shopping for big named brands, buy the supermarkets ‘own brand’ food. It might not always taste the same but it’s just as good and will save you pounds. It might help if you take a shopping list with you and make sure that you stick to it!

Travel

One of the easiest ways to save on travel is to walk or cycle. However, if we’re being realistic, this isn’t always practical. At the start of each week or month, work out how many days you will be using public transport as there are usually weekly or monthly savers available. These may be beneficial even if you are only saving yourself a few pennies. If you’re lucky enough to have a car try keeping its use to a minimum as fuel and servicing isn’t cheap. On nice days it’s still great to walk to Uni.

Bills

Keep your student accommodation utility bills down. One way to save on your water bill is to switch from baths to showers. A shower uses less water and is quicker than having a bath. Also, instead of washing the odd pots and pans here and there, only wash up when the bowl is full. To save on electricity, make sure everything is switched off at the plug socket rather than leaving things on standby. You should only charge your phone when the battery is about to go, rather than charging it numerous times throughout the day. Rather than turning the heating up, get wrapped up in blankets and make use of hot water bottles, it’s cosier!

After the expense of Christmas, you should be thinking of all the ways you can to save money.
