We all know the importance of staying fit and healthy so today we’re going to look at a few things we can do to be that bit healthier and a little more active.
Why is it important?
Staying physically healthy is not only good for the body but can have a seriously positive impact on your emotional health too. By eating a healthy diet and keeping fit, your body will be strong enough to help you cope with the stresses of everyday life and concentrate better on your studies. It is particularly important to try and stay as fit and healthy as possible whilst you’re young because it will help you later on in life. You ought to be getting at least 8 hours of sleep per night, it can be hard to do this as a Uni student with the temptation of many ‘nights out’ ahead of you but you should remember that your health and studies are more important.
Tips to Remember
- Drink plenty of water
- Get 8 hours of sleep per night
- Eat & maintain a healthy balanced diet
- Exercise regularly
- Avoid smoking and drinking (drinking might be difficult to avoid but don’t drink to excess)
- Staying Motivated
- Keeping motivated is the hardest part when it comes to staying fit and healthy especially with all the take-aways and fast food restaurants and friends encouraging you to go out partying all night but below are some tips that will help you to keep motivated:
- Keep a food journal – track the food you eat, highlighting the ones that you enjoyed more so you can make them again. It will also help you track what junk food you eat
- Plan your food for the week ahead – by doing this you can arrange your food shop around your schedule, ensuring that you are getting the balanced diet you need
- Try to eat small portions but regularly – eat around every 2-3 hours, snacking on fruit, veg and fat-free yogurt for example to keep you fuller for longer so you aren’t tempted to run out and grab fast food
- Treat yourself to one CHEAT DAY each week – when you cut out all bad food at once it can be easier to fall back into your old ways and start to binge on bad food again
- Join a gym with a friend – make a pact to go at least 2-3 times a week. Go early in the morning if possible – once it’s done in the morning you can then focus on what you have planned for the rest of the day. Think about where you can be in 6 months’ time – visualise your success and how you want to look/feel.
- Have realistic goals and time spans. Plan the days you can fit exercising in – this way you’ll have a regular plan so that you’re more likely to stick to it
