Money Saving Tips

One subject most students can probably relate to, is lack of funds. It can be stressful for students to constantly have to worry about money, especially if you’re in a new city and away from home so here are a few tips to help that student loan stretch a little further.

The most important step in managing money is to budget, budget, budget. If you sit down and really plan how much you can afford to spend on certain things it will really help you understand where your money is going.

When planning your food shop for example, set a budget to ensure that when you get to the shops you aren’t just putting anything you want in your basket, check the prices and ask yourself whether you really need it.

It’s also helpful to keep on top of what you need, so when you run out of things like milk or shampoo, add it to a list on your phone. This will save you money in the long run as you won’t be buying multiples of things you don’t really need yet.

Make sure when you are budgeting you allow a little money for your social life and self-care items as that is important for your mental health and lifestyle.

Another smart way of saving money is to look out for second-hand course books. If they have the right content in them why buy them brand new? Lots of students sell them and even sometimes give them away for free after finishing their courses. Good places to look out for them would be Facebook marketplace and eBay, but also ask around to see if anyone you know might have some.

Whenever you are shopping, ask if they offer student discounts. In most shops they will take your student ID as proof but if not, there is an app called Unidays which makes one for you and most shops accept it. Many shops offer 10% off but some go up to 15% so it’s always worth asking. Restaurants are also worth checking out too as some do discounts there too.
