Remaining focused during the pandemic is a challenge for everyone. Each and every one of us has had to find different ways of coping. Learning has moved from the classroom to online. It can be really hard to learn when you are not in the right environment. So, how do you stay focused when the world appears to be in chaos?
Step 1 – Create a Workspace
When you are not used to working from home, it can be tempting to work whilst you are in bed or relaxing on the sofa. However, we all know that you will just end up chilling out and watching TV instead. So, setting up a workspace in your student accommodation will allow you to be more productive. The one thing we could all do a little more with is desk space (you know how messy they can get) and if you’re in bed or on the sofa, you won’t be getting the workspace that you need.
Step 2 – Keep it Clean & Tidy
No one wants to work in a dirty messy area. By keeping your workspace clean and tidy, you will be even more motivated to get back to working the following day. Even if mess doesn’t bother you, you’ll be able to work effectively. When your desk is filled with none-related work items, if can be easier for you to procrastinate and focus on the wrong things.
Step 3 – Take Regular Breaks
This doesn’t mean that you should check your phone every 15 minutes or so. However, you should allow yourself a normal dinner break and two 15-minute breaks throughout the day. Yes, this is more than you are probably used to but when you’re working/studying from home, it’s very different to what you’re used to. So, don’t be so hard on yourself.
Step 4 – Follow Your Normal Routine
Obviously, working from home isn’t the normal thing to do. However, you have to make it feel as normal as possible, including following your normal routine. When you get out of your routine, it can be easy to sit around all day and forget about your responsibilities. This also means, ditching the pyjama look and putting on your normal everyday clothes.
Step 5 – Stay Active
Like many people, you’ve probably not been as active as you usually are. Although we’ve had lots more spare time, our motivation to stay active has worn off towards the end of lockdown. However, ensure that you are doing something to stay active. This could be a quick workout routine in the morning or evening or going on long walks when you get the chance.
