It can be a worrying time if you feel you have chosen the wrong course, but you certainly won’t be alone. If you feel early on that you have gone down the wrong path, you need to speak to someone as soon as possible, don’t just stick with it if your heart isn’t in it. Some universities will let you change courses in the first term whilst others make you wait until the next academic year which is why it’s so important to say something sooner rather than later.
You will know yourself if your heart isn’t in it, but you might have friends that feel they have chosen the wrong course too but don’t have the confidence to ask for help. So, it is important that we recognise the signs not just for ourselves, but for others as well.
Not turning up to lectures
You may feel a sense of dread or zero motivation when you think about attending lectures, which says a lot. If you were 100% interested in the subject and wanted to expand your knowledge, then you would be keen to go. Similarly, if you’re in lectures, not really listening or taking anything in, then it might be time to talk to someone and look at other options. We all have days where we can’t focus but if it is a reoccurring thing for you, you need to ask yourself why.
You’re just not that passionate about the course
Think of your course a little like a relationship, after all, you’ll be studying for 3 whole years and then going into a job within that field. It should motivate you to get out of bed in the morning and be something you’re passionate about. If it’s not, maybe it’s not the course for you.
It’s making you upset, stressed and deflated
We all have days where we feel all these things, some of us more than others but you shouldn’t be feeling this way about your course all the time. If you feel like this in the very early stages of your course, then how are you going to feel 3 years down the line? Having passion is what keeps you going in life. You feel excited, happy and full of motivation for something. That is how you should feel about your Uni course.
Not so perfect grades…
We can’t all expect the highest grades all the time and even though people will want the best for you, they know that you’re prone to a bad day which can lead to things not always being so great. But, if your grades are consistently on the low side, you may need to ask yourself why. Sometimes, you might be passionate about the subject but just don’t fully understand what you need to do, which is fine. However, if you never really understand what is being taught in lectures, aren’t 100% focused or aren’t really ‘there’, you need to discuss it with someone.
If you feel like you have made a mistake with the path that you have chosen, there are people at all universities you can talk too. Similarly, if you are noticing the signs with a friend, then reach out to them and ask if they need any help.
We hope that this blog has been of use to you and remember, don’t leave things too late before you discuss things with someone.
