Time For a Spring Clean?

Yes, it’s that time of year again! Of course, there’s never a wrong time Spring really is the perfect time of year to get everything clean and fresh.

For those of you moving out of your student accommodation in June or July, getting things in order well before then can make the moving process much smoother. In this blog, we’ve listed our student house spring cleaning tips. We’ve been in the business for a good few decades now so we know just what it takes to have happy tenants and a happy home.

Split the Cleaning Duties

Often there may be one of you who tends to tidy up after everyone just that little bit more – that’s totally natural. But when doing a big house clean it is great to have everybody involved. That’s right, it’s time to get your gloves on and get stuck in! A student house spring clean should be split equally between all tenants – with everyone taking a fair share of the mucky jobs and the easier jobs too. There’s nothing like the shared happiness of a big house clean.

Get Some Thrifty Cleaning Products

Cleaning products can be expensive but there are lots of cheaper options that do the job just as well. There are also a range of cleaning solutions to be found with products you probably already have. Here are some of our favourites:

Lemons: Mixing lemon juice with some water is a fantastic way to clean glass, wood, or laminated surfaces. You can heat up some lemons and rinds with some vinegar and water in the microwave, let it rest and then give it a quick wipe down for a fresh smelling, super clean microwave. If you have any fond bakers in the home, you’re sure to have some baking soda in the cupboard and you can combine lemon juice with baking soda to create a fantastic cleaning solution that is natural, cost-efficient, and good for tables, sinks and general surfaces.

Cola: This one surprised us too. Whoever is on sink or toilet duty can find great solace in that Cola from the chippy that no one ever drank. It’s a fantastically acidic cleaning solution for limescale and armed with a bottle of Cola and a brush or cloth you’ll be unstoppable.

Old Socks: You can’t stop certain parts of your home from collecting dust. Black surfaces, TVs and game consoles are particularly good dust collectors. Instead of buying wipes or dusters, grab a pair of old socks, stick your hands in them and start wiping down. Be careful with TVs and ensure you’re gentle with them, using the right cleaning products (if any) to prevent damage.

Tidy Your Bedrooms at the Same Time

Each of you will have a bedroom of course. Partake in some camaraderie and take on your bedrooms at the same time. Bedrooms can be the messiest part of a shared home because they’re your private spaces that you don’t have to keep clean for anyone but yourself. Some of you may have bedrooms that are spick and span already (shout out to the clean freak of the house if that’s the case), but chances are a lot of you could do with a bedroom cleaning too. This is an essential part of the shared experience of cleaning that we mentioned earlier and creates a strong sense of togetherness from something that can typically feel quite alienating.

Organise the Fridge

Experience has shown us that a fridge is best organised when split. It is a good idea to separate the contents of the fridge so that everyone has their own section. Likewise, therefore, each person will be responsible for the cleanliness of their section. The fridge is likely to have a few bits of expired food that could go in the bin too, so having a fridge clear out will be great for preventing bad smells and don’t forget that lemon juice here too!

Get A Storage Box

A shop like Wilko in Sheffield city centre is a great place to go for a stylish, low-cost box to store things in. We recommend each housemate have at least one in their bedrooms. Some may want it for clothes that are out of season, others may want it for their arts & crafts or educational books. You can’t go wrong with a space saving solution like this to give you a little more room and organisation.

We hope this blog has created a little cleaning inspiration for all of our student tenants, both current and future and look forward to assisting you in your search for student accommodation in Sheffield next year.
