Congratulations on your A-Level results! Now comes the hard part… deciding which Uni you should go to. For many of you, you may have already made up your mind which university you will be attending, but is it practical?
There are a few things to factor in when choosing a university.
Some of these are:
Is it close to where you live/work?
If your preferred university is an hour or more away from where you live, it might not be practical unless you are going to move out of your home and into student accommodation near the university. Working in one place and studying in another is going to be a struggle. You might not think this now, but consider your studies, travel time/costs, time for yourself and family, revision time and so on, not to mention fitting in a part time job.
Take Advice from Your Family
Sometimes, we don’t always know what the best thing to do is, so taking advice from the people that know you best and have your best interests at heart is a great idea. Your loved ones will help you in your decision and may even have suggestions you hadn’t yet considered. Whatever you decide no doubt they’ll support you all the way.
Consider the course structure
If you’re planning on working and studying in separate places then you need to think about how a part time job is going to fit around your Uni course, not the other way around. You will need to know if the course has a lot of group work involved, how many essays you’ll have to write and exams you’ll need to take. Also, where will you revise? Many students choose the library as it has all the resources you need and it’s calm and quiet, the best environment to study in.
Just because you might only have to attend Uni lectures 3 days a week in the first year doesn’t mean it will stay the same for subsequent years. You need to plan how flexible you can be. If you are in a job where the management are understanding then that’s great but if not, you’ll need to figure this part out.
We’d recommend sitting down with your family and writing a list of pros and cons regards the universities that you’re considering. This is one of the best ways to work out where you should study.
