Balancing University And Your Social life

Whether it’s your first, second or third year, as your studies get into full swing, university life can feel a little overwhelming. With the night’s drawing in and daylight hours getting shorter and shorter it is easy to become lazy and just have a nap or a chilled-out evening.

But with Christmas and the New Year approaching you really want to plan for a stress-free festive period without rushing to finish your work. So here are a few tips to balance your social life whilst also ensuring your studies are completed on time.

The simplest way to ensure work isn’t left to the last minute is always have a to-do list on hand whether this be handwritten in your diary or notebook or digitally on your phone or tablet. Having all of your tasks and due dates clearly written down will really help you focus and get them completed.

It’s also a good idea to get into the habit of setting up reminders on your phone which will help keep you on schedule.

Your studies will take up a lot of your time but remember to take regular breaks, grab a bite to eat and drink, or take a short walk.

Obviously as well as achieving your degree, university involves a social life, but you also need to make sure you get your priorities right and you’re not just partying all the time. That will only cause you to miss lectures and fall behind in your studying. It’s all about moderation, enjoying yourself whilst also getting your working done.

A good way to work this could be to treat yourself to a night out as a reward for finishing your work. Pick days when you haven’t got a lecture early the next day, this will help reduce the worry whilst you’re out enjoying yourself.

Where possible, make sure you’re working in daylight hours as working when its dark isn’t going to motivate you so much. Also have a neutral space to work in with minimal distractions. If your student accommodation has a kitchen or living area this could be the perfect place to set up working for the day. Or many people love working in coffee shops and Sheffield has many of those to choose from!

So don’t feel too stressed if your motivation for studying isn’t great right now as most people feel the same at this time of year but take time to plan how you’re going to work now, and it will pay off in the long run.
