As a first time Uni student it can be tricky to know which type of accommodation would be best for you. There’s quite a range of student accommodation available and for each type, there are pros and cons.

Halls of Residence

This can be one of the easier options as they are arranged through your university. This type of student accommodation tends to be located on campus so convenient. However, some of the downsides to halls of residence is that they are sometimes basic, you often have little control over who your fellow residents are going to be, and they can be expensive for what you get.

Private Halls

Private halls are like halls of residence but with a few differences. Compared to Uni halls, private halls tend to have better facilities. Some have gyms, games rooms, cinema rooms, pizza nights and themed party nights. There are different accommodation options available with private halls, for example, you could have a studio apartment all to yourself, or you could have a bedroom and an en-suite but share your living room and kitchen with others. However, the downside to private halls, is that they tend to be a lot more expensive and with students not always being able to make their student loan cover their accommodation costs, it may not be the best option for you.

Private Rented Houses/Flats & Rooms

‍This type of student accommodation happens to be one of the more popular choices. These houses are typically managed by landlords or agents. You can find properties that are only one bed but often, students share a house with other students which can be a great way to make new friends, or, you and your friends can take a whole house. Private rented houses are usually located in neighbourhoods with other students living in them. The quality of each student property varies so it pays to look around and choose a landlord or agent that is long established and has a great reputation. If you and your friends are hoping to live together, then this may be one of the better options for you. There are many landlords that have multiple properties, all with a different number of rooms, so they will help you find the perfect property for you. Some landlords only offer a Rent Only option, meaning you sort out your own bills.
