Cheap Dates for Sheffield Students
It’s February! And once again love is in the air… for Valentine’s Day. The Valentine’s Day formula is a funny one. It’s endlessly sweet… somewhat demanding – and it can be really expensive too. Some set themselves expectations to make it the most perfect day ever… others want something cool, relaxed and simple. We understand both. We’ve pulled together some tips to make this Valentine’s Day whatever you want it to be… decadent, exciting, playful or filling! And all on a budget too!
Cuddle Some Sheffield Alpacas
Have you been to the Sheffield Mayfield Alpacas farm? No? You should definitely go this Valentine’s Day. There is something real cute and romantic about this spot. It’s forecast to be sunny this Valentine’s Day, and there’s no better way to enjoy the sun than being outside with cute animals. We love a bit of wintersun here at Sheffield Student Property – it makes the perfect setting for a bit of hand holding. You won’t only find alpacas at this gorgeous farm, but also llamas, pigs, meerkats and turkeys. It’s totally perfect for animal lovers and for those on a budget at only £3.50 an entry ticket.
Hit the Treehouse Cafe
The Treehouse Cafe continues to take Sheffield by storm. It’s a fantastic hangout for people, both young and old and is still a bit of a hidden gem as Sheffield’s first board game cafe tucked away off London Road. This is a great place to come on a double date to enjoy a game or two. The staff are lovely and always offer recommendations and help for those of you less experienced in the board game world. Students go FREE before 7pm on weekdays (Valentine’s Day is a Thursday, so win-win) and if you fancy more of a late night thing, it only costs £5 for a four hour session after 7pm. We always recommend booking a table – because it does fill up fast.
Visit the Peak District
Any excuse to visit the Peak District, honestly. A romantic walk, hike or climb is perfect for those looking for an outdoorsy way to celebrate their romance. You can get to the Peak District for only a couple of pounds on the bus. You can use the 218 or the 275 bus services to keep the trip quick and simple. For those of you who are truly tireless – you can walk there too. It’s a lovely walk (completely manageable if you somehow are ultra fit), particularly for those on Endcliffe student grounds, or around the Ecclesall Road and Hunters Bar areas. The Peak District stands like an endless path of greenery, adventure and exploration. It’s kind of a metaphor for love, really. (Yes, we said it.) Go explore it – and take a picnic.
Get Some Delicious Sushi
You didn’t think you’d come on here and not read about food, did you? Sushi remains a longstay of popular food culture in Sheffield due to the fact that:
1) It’s delicious
2) You can go big or go small
3) You can find a good sushi place in the most trendy parts of the city
You’ve got Mr Miyagi’s on Division Street, where you can get the tastiest sushi starting at only £2 per dish and Chahan deals on Thursdays (meaning a delicious bowl of Japanese fried rice for only £6.) There’s Sakushi on Campo Lane in the city centre with award winning sushi for all. They’re offering 50% on selected food items from Monday-Thursday. And last but not least, there’s Yama Sushi on London Road where you can get a delicious meal for under a tenner. What’s not to like? Celebrate Valentine’s Day with a little sushi this year.
Go to the Movies
At the Sheffield Showroom Cinema, those who are 26 and under get to see any film for under a fiver. Unfortunately, Valentine’s Day isn’t on a Tuesday or Wednesday this year because on these days you can combine this already brilliant offer with the Meerkat Movies deal – halving the price of your ticket. So… we’re holding out for you, 2023 and 2024. There are a great selection of films to see here this Thursday. The options range from award winning period comedy-drama The Favourite to critically acclaimed heart-wrenching love story If Beale Street Could Talk and groundbreaking South-Korean mystery Burning. I mean… can we watch all of them, please?
Check Out the Millenium Gallery
Visit Sheffield’s renowned Millenium Gallery for a cultured date that is still cheap and cheerful. This top spot allows you to go in for free and asks only for donations! They are currently running a Leonardo da Vinci exhibition with 12 of his drawings on display as part of a nationwide exhibition marking the 500th anniversary of his death. The Millenium Gallery is open until 8pm every Thursday so it makes the perfect place to take your Valentine just before dinner – or the pub.
Have a Drink at The Red Deer
This pub is popular with students with good reason. It’s a lovely, cosy, homely pub with a continual fantastic selection of drinks – both soft and alcoholic (it’s a school night kids!) It’s a great place to go for those looking for good conversation accompanied by a delicious beverage. The scenery sets itself, really.
