Being at Uni can be hard enough with your studies, part-time jobs, money worries, meeting new people and living with strangers. Then, add in being away from home, family and friends and it can make you feel somewhat isolated. However, don’t think you’re alone in feeling home sick as there are many other students feeling the same.
Below, we have gathered a few tips together to help you cope with feeling homesick.
- Don’t Spend Too Much Time in Your Student Accommodation
As students, it can be hard not to just take ourselves off into our rooms as this is the only place you really have to call your own when at Uni. It’ll be where most of you sleep, eat, study and relax. But, by doing this on a regular basis it can be very isolating which could make you feel worse. It is best to keep yourself busy by going out with your friends and studying in more public places like coffee shops or the library. Simple things like getting to the gym every so often will keep you busy while helping you stay fit and positive. - Keep Homely Comforts Around You
By bringing items from home, your student accommodation will feel a little more like home. Whether it’s a blanket or a teddy that you have had from being young, it’s nothing to be embarrassed about. The chances are that your roommates will have brought theirs too! - Explore Your Surroundings
Part of feeling at home is knowing where everything is, not just in your student accommodation but also the local area. Knowing where your nearest shop is, the parks, bars and cafes are will help make you feel more at home. So, wherever it is you have moved to, get out there and explore! After all, it will be your home for the next 3-4 years. To make exploring better, take a friend or roommate with you because they might be feeling exactly how you are. - Contact People Back Home (but not all the time)
It’s important for you to stay in contact with your friends and family back home because chances are, they’ll be finding it just as hard not having you around. But, staying in constant contact with them could make the transition harder for you. You need to remember that your family and friends aren’t going to forget about you just because you’re at Uni. - Ask for Help if You Need it
It’s a massive jump from school to university. Some of you may choose to move out and into Uni accommodation but are still close to home. However, some of you will be miles from home, the home that’s been all you’ve known for 18 years and that transition can be tough. However, remember there are people you can talk to if you feel like you need it. Most universities have counselling services that you can use so don’t feel embarrassed, use them, that’s what they’re there for.
