When the news you’ve been so eagerly waiting for finally arrives and you’ve secured your place at Uni, the fact that it’s now really happening could feel a little daunting. But don’t worry, we have some tips and advice that may help make moving into your student accommodation in Sheffield run a little smoother.
This is probably the first time you’ve moved away from home but rather than letting it worry you, try thinking about it as an exciting adventure. A new chapter in your life is about to begin, and with it will come lots of fun and freedom.
Here are a few tips to make moving out that much easier:
- First, choose student property that is not too far away from your university and that has suitable public transport to get you there if needed. The last thing you need on your first day is to be stressing about how you get to Uni or being late for lessons. Check out discount travel cards if you’re going to be using public transport a lot.
- If possible, ensure you have checked out your student accommodation well before your moving in day just so you know what to expect. You then know the size of your accommodation which will help you when choosing what to take with you. You’ll also know where you can park (if applicable) and where to unload.
- Equally as important is to check out the social facilities around your student accommodation. Are there shops, supermarkets, cafes, and pubs nearby that you can easily walk to?
- If you are sharing your student accommodation with other people, it’s a great idea to meet up for a coffee or a meal before you move in so you can all get to know each other. Often there are online groups that you can join to see where people are going to be living or you could ask your landlord to pass on your details to the other housemates. You’ll soon be making lots of friends and wondering why you ever worried in the first place.
- Plan the dates you’ll return home throughout the year to see your friends and family. This will give you something to look forward to whilst also giving you the time to get your assignments done.
- Sort out your finances so you have peace of mind that your student loans or other finances will suffice. Now that you have your accommodation you should be able to budget so you know what’s coming in and what’s going out.
- Before move day, write up a ‘to pack’ list and instead of rushing it at the last minute, pack gradually over days and weeks. If you’ve already visited your student accommodation as we mentioned in point 2 above, you’ll know what space you have.
- Make sure you’re self-sufficient. Yes, you read that right! You’re off into the big wide world so it’s going to be easier if you know how to wash your clothes, clean your student accommodation, and of course cook. Start with simple things like baked potatoes or spaghetti Bolognese, you’ll soon pick it up.
- Register with a local GP or if you plan to stay with your existing GP and you’re on medication make suitable arrangements so that your supply is uninterrupted.
- Get involved in freshers’ week, there’s no better way to help you settle into student life. Your student’s union is a great place to start as they’ll host events that will give you the opportunity to join groups and meet others in the same boat as you.
Above all, enjoy it, it will be an amazing chapter in your life!
