I think we can officially say, it is ‘that time of year’ again…

Cold dark nights, big coats, jumpers, boots, heating on, blankets, early bedtimes, movie days, hot chocolate, warm comfort food and all that jazz.

It can be harder to stick to a diet and remain fit at the time of year. After all, there is no need for a ‘summer bod’ this time of year. However, it is important to keep fit and stay healthy! In certain ways, it can be easy to eat the right kind of foods as it’s all Sunday dinners and homemade soups. But, then again… there is the chocolate, mince pies and festive goods everywhere you go.

You get the people who haven’t attended the gym all year now taking over as they don’t want to feel guilty about all the food they’ll be eating over winter. You get the ones who only come during summer to keep up with their ‘summer bod’ going back in to hibernation until after Christmas. but, it is important that you stick to a regular work out routine and a good healthy diet all year round. Below, are just a few ways that you can mix up your workout routine without going off track.

  • Workout at home more often

If you’re like me and work out in the evening, the believe me, I know how it feels to have been out in the cold all day, just wanting to come home and get in bed with a good cuppa. The motivation for the gym wears off at the end of the day… So, why not try working out at home?

Some perks of this are:

  1. You can do it in your ‘comfies’
  2. You can still binge watch your program
  3. No extra travel
  4. Get straight in to a hot bubble bath after
  • Don’t let a busy day get in the way

Even though your schedule is getting busier, don’t let the lack of spare time distract you from a workout. You don’t always have to do an hour a day, even a half an hour mat work out or jog is enough so you don’t lose your motivation. You can even try the simple things such as parking further away from the doors so you get a bit of extra walking done or taking the stairs rather than the lift.

  • Cook your own meals

We know that is is so much easier to get in and just order a pizza. However, you want to make sure that you are still eating all the right foods. Try a day of batch cooking so you can freeze food to heat up later in the week. Or, crack out the slow cooker again so your food will be ready as soon as you get back in.

  • Be realistic

If you know that you’re days are about to get a heck of a lot busier, them don’t try and stick to the four/five or more days workout routine that you had time for over the summer. Yes, your health is important but don’t let it take over everything. Remember, you still have uni work and other tasks that need to be done first. Also, allow yourself a cheat meal now and then. We all need a bit of comfort food at some point!
