First off, let us say right from the start that the best cure for a hangover is not to drink too much in the first place. However, we do recognise that unfortunately, hangovers can become a part of university life and everyone looks for that elusive cure for a fast recovery. No-one likes that morning after feeling, but truth be told, there isn’t any quick fix.

However, if you do have one too many, there are a few things you can do to help you feel a little better.

First of all, when you get back to your student accommodation, before you go to bed try to drink a pint of water to re-hydrate you while you sleep. Also, pop a bottle of water next to your bed.

  • Sleep

Get as much sleep as possible and rest your body. Hopefully you don’t have things to do the next day such as work or lectures.

  • Rehydrate

Drinking alcohol dehydrates you so you need to drink plenty of water to rehydrate. Hopefully you had that pint of water before you went to bed and each time you wake, drink from the bottle next to your bed. When you feel like you’re on your way to recovery, try drinking fruit or vegetable juice to get the vitamins and minerals you need back in your system. You might think that drinking coffee will help but you should actually avoid it. Caffeine can make headaches worse and in large quantities coffee can actually dehydrate you.

  • Eat

When hungover, the thought of food can be repulsive to many. However, it’s important that you get some food back into your stomach. Try eating plain foods, even if it’s just toast.

  • Take a Refreshing Shower

There is nothing worse than feeling grubby from the night before. Take a refreshing shower and clean yourself up. Having a nice invigorating shower will wake you up and help prevent you feeling so groggy. Make sure it’s not too hot or too cold as it may be a shock to your system. Choose just the right temperature.

  • Avoid More Alcohol

Steer clear of the ‘hair of the dog’. That only temporarily eases the symptoms as it puts alcohol back in your system when your body is actually trying to adjust to taking it out.

Never let drinking become a problem. Don’t drink too regularly or too much, and stick to within the recommended limits published by the government and health organisations such as the NHS Alcohol Support Website.
