Things to Check Before Leaving Your Student House for The Christmas Break

It’s that exciting time of year again and lots of you will be leaving Sheffield for home so here are a few things to take care of in your student accommodation before you leave.

Heating – Even if you’re on an all-inclusive package there’s no point wasting energy if you don’t have to, particularly with what’s going on in the world currently. However, you don’t want to turn it off completely either as this could cause even bigger problems. Turn it down and maybe reduce the overall time it’s on but don’t turn it off completely or you could experience frozen and burst pipes as the temperature drops whilst you’re away. Always check with your landlord if you’re unsure.

Fridge – You don’t want to return in January to a smelly fridge so empty it and give it a good clean out so it’s nice and fresh ready for when you get back.

 Rubbish – Just like your fridge, you really don’t want to come back to smelly student accommodation because there’s rotten food left in your inside bins so remember to empty them and maybe even rinse out with mild detergent ready for your return.

Valuables – Try to take any valuables with you or if possible, find a secure place to leave them where they can’t be accessed.

Unplug – Turn off all non-essential electric items at the wall, even stand by lights are using electricity and they’re not needed if you’re not there. Remember to leave your fridge freezer on however!

Security – Lock all doors and windows. As mentioned above, take valuables with you, or secure them. Ensure nothing tempting is on display and remember to set the alarm if you have one.

Tell Your Landlord – Finally, let your landlord know that you’re leaving for the Christmas break and then go and have a wonderful Christmas and a Happy New Year!
