Tips for Spring Cleaning Your Student Accommodation
It’s that time of year again! Though there’s never a wrong time to get things tidy, the Spring is the perfect time of year for a house clean. For those of you moving out in June or July, getting things in order well before then can make the process much smoother. Some of you will have lived in your student accommodation for a few years and your properties could be due a little TLC. In this blog, we’ve listed our student house spring cleaning tips. We’ve been in the biz for a good few decades now… so we know just what it takes to have happy tenants and a happy home.
Split the Cleaning Duties
Living in shared student accommodation means being considerate to those you live with. This consideration can manifest in a lot of ways. Like, playing music everybody likes, tidying up after yourself once you’re done in the kitchen or sharing food with everyone. But cleaning can be an often overlooked way of showing consideration to others. Often in friendship groups, there may be one of you who tends to tidy up after everyone just that little bit more – that’s totally natural. But when doing a big house clean, it is great to have everybody involved – creating a shared experience of cleaning. That’s right – it’s time to get your gloves on and get stuck in!! A student house spring clean should be split equally between all tenants – with everyone taking a fair chunk of the mucky jobs and the easier jobs too. There’s nothing like the shared happiness of a big house clean… you’ll see.
Get Some Thrifty Cleaning Products
Cleaning products can be really expensive but there are a bunch of cheaper options that do the job just as well. There are also a range of cleaning solutions to be found with products you likely already have in. Here are some of our favourites:
Lemons: Mixing lemon juice with some water is a fantastic way to clean glass, wood or laminated surfaces. You can heat up some lemons and rinds with some vinegar and water in the microwave, let it rest and then give it a quick wipedown for a fresh smelling, super clean microwave. If you have any fond bakers in the home, you’re sure to have some baking soda in the cupboard. You can combine lemon juice with baking soda to create a fantastic cleaning solution that is natural, cost-efficient and good for tables, sinks and general surfaces.
Coca Cola: This one surprised us too. Whoever is on sink or toilet duty can find great solace in the Coca Cola bottle from the chippy that no one ever drank. It’s a fantastically acidic cleaning solution for limescale and general toilet bowl muck. Armed with a bottle of Coca Cola and a brush or cloth- you’re unstoppable.
Old Socks: You can’t stop certain parts of your home from collecting dust. Black surfaces, TVs and game consoles are particularly bad for this. Instead of buying wipes or dusters, grab a pair of old socks, stick your hands in them and start wiping down. Be careful with TVs and ensure you’re gentle with them, using the right cleaning products (if any) to prevent damage.
Tidy Your Bedrooms At the Same Time
Each of you will have a bedroom, of course. Partake in some camaraderie and take on your bedrooms at the same time. Bedrooms can be the messiest part of a shared home. This is because your bedroom is a private space that you don’t have to keep clean for anyone but yourself. It’s a room that can see a lot of rushing in and out, making it hard to be organised all the time. Some of you may have bedrooms that are spick and span already (shout out to the clean freak of the house), but chances are a lot of you could do with a bedroom cleaning too. We recommend doing the bedroom tidying at the same time as each other. This is an essential part of the shared experience of cleaning that we mentioned earlier. It creates a strong sense of togetherness from something that can typically feel quite alienating.
Organise the Fridge
Experience has shown us that a fridge is best organised when split. It is a good idea to separate the contents of the fridge so that everyone has their own section. Going forward, each person will be responsible for the cleanliness of their section. The fridge is likely to have a few bits of expired food that could go in the bin too, so having a fridge clear out will be great for preventing bad smells.
Get A Storage Box
A shop like Wilko in Sheffield city centre is a great place to go for a stylish, thrifty box to store things in. We recommend each housemate having at least one in their bedrooms. Some may want it for clothes that are out of season, others may want it for their arts & crafts or educational books. You can’t go wrong with a space saving solution to give you a little more room.
We hope this blog has acted as a little bit of cleaning inspiration for all of our student tenants, both current and future! The Spring is a good period of time to make a change… and the best changes start at home.
