Tips on Surviving Uni
You’re probably fully aware that university is going to be very different from school. It’s the time when you step out into the world and become fully independent. So, today we’re going to share with you some tips on how to enjoy the best experience at Uni.
All-nighters are NOT Fun
One of the main stories that you hear about Uni students is that they stayed up all night working on their essays. There is no reason you should need to stay up until 5am doing Uni work, unless you have your priorities all wrong. There’s nothing worse than spending all day out with friends then working a late shift only to come home and start Uni work knowing you have a 9am lecture. A decent night’s sleep is so important as mentioned in our previous blog about taking care of yourself.
Your student loan is NEVER enough
In an ideal world, your student loan would cover everything from rent, food and travel to all your Uni expenses. However, the fact is that’s not how it often works. The harsh truth is that your student loan may not even cover your rent! Most students are left around £200 short every month. This is exactly why it’s so important to start looking for a part time job if you haven’t already.
Living off take-aways & microwave meals = BAD IDEA
You might be thinking that takeaways and cheap microwave meals are the way to go at Uni due to lack of money and time. However, in fact, you will be spending a lot more than you need to if you do this. Not only does it take a toll on your bank balance but your waistline too. If you are struggling with your time management then here is what you should do: take one day a week where you have some free time and batch cook your meals. By doing this, you’ll be saving yourself money and freeing up more time which you can use for studying. You can freeze meals for the whole week and then microwave them as you need them.
“First Year Doesn’t Count” Myth
We’ve all heard this one, especially, from 1st year students. It’s an easy thing to think when you’re feeling unmotivated and tired but, even if the grades that you get in the first year don’t count towards your final grade it doesn’t mean that this year can be spent putting zero effort in. It’s all experience and still a huge part of your learning otherwise, what would be the point of them teaching you anything at all?
Work Experience is VERY Helpful
Many students tend to leave work experience up until the last minute making it harder for them to find the relevant experience they need. Today, employers expect to see more on your CV than just a degree. All a degree is showing a prospective employer is that you have studied this subject and have done well which is fantastic, but they’ll also be looking to see what skills you have and how you will adapt into their working environment. So, don’t leave it last minute to find the experience relevant to you.
