Moving away from home is a big deal for anyone and when you head off to Uni, it’s perfectly natural that homesickness might creep in. If your student accommodation feels homely it will help you feel much happier and settled.

It tends to be the people around us that make a house feel like a home but whilst you can’t bring your family and friends with you, you can re-create your home environment with a few little changes.

Photographs

Even if you don’t have a lot of photographs up at home, having them in your student accommodation is a great way of keeping your loved ones close to you. To make your room feel even more cosy, you could add some fairy lights around your photos.

Bedding

People underestimate how much bedding makes your bedroom feel like home. Take your own bedding with you, there are no rules saying you can’t! When Uni gets tough and you feel like crawling under the sheets, you’ll be thankful you brought your own bedding, so you feel a little more at ease. Use the same washing powder that you do at home too so you can take that smell with you!

Set Up

If possible, set up your student room like your bedroom at home. Add your rugs, bedside tables and a ‘messy’ chair to make it feel more like your own room. If you’re used to having a lamp by your bed, then add one. To make your student accommodation even more cosy, add your favourite cushions and ornaments from home too.

Scent

Adding scent to your student accommodation is another great way to feel more at home. Use your favourite diffuses or air fresheners to get that homely aroma. You could also try using fabric sprays to spray on your bedding to give it that same fresh smell you have at home.

Flowers & Plants

Adding some greenery to your room will give it that naturally fresh feel. Add some easy-to-keep house plants to enhance your room.
